St. Peter the Apostle

St. Peter the Apostle, originally named Simon, was a fisherman from Galilee and one of the first disciples called by Jesus. Renamed Peter—meaning “rock”—he became the leader of the Apostles and is honored as the first Pope of the Catholic Church. Though he denied Jesus three times during the Passion, he repented and went on to preach boldly after the Resurrection and Pentecost. He was martyred in Rome, crucified upside down under Emperor Nero, and is buried beneath St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. His feast is celebrated on June 29, together with St. Paul.
